Ronald Reeves
Ron Reeves is a percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator. He has performed with most major Australian orchestras, and was a founding member of Synergy Percussion. His engagement with Indonesia began In 1977, when he was sent by the Department of Foreign Affairs to teach Western classical percussion, and has continued to this day.
His initial stay was 6 years, and apart from teaching he also studied and played North Sumatran music and various forms of gamelan, and played drums and percussion with Indonesian pop and jazz bands.
As well as Indonesia Ron has studied traditional music in South India and Hungary. His practise these days, when not purely traditional, often combines instruments, concepts and musicians from diverse backgrounds. He has been a member of Gamelan DanAnda since 2017, and has also performed with Cirebon gamelan group Putra Panji Asmara, and east Javanese group Reog Jangkar Bumi in that time.
Ron has been voted best percussionist in Indonesia, and his trio Okuta Percussion won a German critics award for Best World Music release. His trio Warogus was the Indonesian element in the award winning Drummers of Gilgamesh (Australian Music Centre: Instrumental Work of the Year 2002). He co-wrote and recorded gamelan music for the opening ceremony of the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, and for the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Congress in Sydney 2008. He has also composed for Gamelan DanAnda and other contemporary ensembles.
