Classes Explained

Kids & Parents Class

Duration: 1 hour

Schedule: Sundays 10:30-11:30am

Designed for primary to lower-high school-aged children and their parents to learn and play side-by-side, this class introduces the fundamental techniques and sounds of Balinese Gamelan in a fun, engaging environment. Emphasizing the cooperative nature of the ensemble, families will work together to master traditional melodies and interlocking rhythms, building musical confidence and connecting across generations. No prior musical experience is required, but there are many fun challenges for those who do have musical experience.

Style & Techniques Class

Duration: 1 hour

Schedule: Sundays 12:00-1:00pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays 6:00-7:00pm

The classes use a selection of traditional repertoire to explore the various playing techniques of Balinese Gamelan instruments. Always with an underlying focus on cooperative musicianship, the classes gradually introduce students to the full range of rhythmic patterns, compositional concepts, and performative contexts which make Balinese Gamelan such a unique and fascinating art form.

Repertoire Club

Duration: 2 hours

Schedule: Sundays 1:00-3:00pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays 7:00-9:00pm

The class moves quickly through a number of lengthy compositions, often played at a fast pace, and is best approached after gaining some familiarity with the essential techniques and styles of Gamelan. Listening to the MP3s of this group's playlist before joining is highly recommended, and quite enjoyable!
